on pressing spacebar between a word the next letter is deleted

when i am typing a sentence and want to put in a missed letter in a word
inbetween, i place the ponter at that particular spot and add the letter.
but then the adjascent letter and those that follow get deleted in
succession. the same happens with the space bar in between words. why is
this? i asked the computer suppliers but they are unable to solve the
problem. they suggest re-installing word. i am using Microsoft Office Word
2003.
