Why when I open up a .pub file I only see strange characters?

I tried opening up a .pub file but instead of the intended document I just
see coding instead, do I have to convert it to something else? Thanks for any
help.

If you're trying to open it in Word (the focus of this NG), then that's the
problem, as .pub files can be opened only in Publisher.

Maybe because you're trying to open a Publisher file with Word - and that
doesn't work.
