why, when i open a documant in word it virus scans & takes ages

when i open word, publisher or a document I have saved on a Contact i takes
ages to open. Not only that Word and Publisher takes ages to open too. PLEASE
HELP IT IS DRIVING ME INSANE!!!

Virus scanning is not performed by any Microsoft Office application; it is a
function of an add-in ("plug-in") provided by your antivirus software.
Norton AntiVirus, for example, has an "Office Plug-in" that can be disabled
without compromising your security provided you leave Auto-Protect enabled.
