How do I prevent a virus scan being run everytime I open a docume.

Word 2003 takes forever to open, and then when opening a document, a virus
scan is run that takes 5 minutes or so. How do I fix this problem, or at
least disable the scan and make Word open faster. I also have Excel and
PowerPoint, and but they both open relatively fast compared to Word.

The virus scan message comes not from Word but from linked anti-virus
software. Checking of Word/Office documents can usually be deselected in the
AV program e.g. in Norton AV by turning off its Office Plug-in.

With some versions of the Norton product it may be necessary to unregister
the calling DLL by running the following command line from Windows > Start >
Run

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
or
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton systemworks\norton
antivirus\officeav.dll"

Other AV apps eg the popular free ediition of Grisoft's AVG antivirus
software, require similar treatment.
In this instance:

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgoff2k.dll"

I have the free version of AVG so I ran the command line, but Word still
takes forever to open. Do you have any idea why that is? Also I have
Ad-Aware, does that need to be unregistered? Thanks for the help/

Hi Russell,

Anti-spyware software might use the same mechanism to link itself into
Word. You can try unregistering it, but I am not aware of Ad-Aware
causing the issue you are describing.

Do you have any old Word add-ins? Check your Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE11\Startup folder for any files with the extension .wll.
EndNote 7 might be a good candidate btw.
It is true that this message is generally triggered by an anti-virus
program. However, Word 2003 (and 2007 as well) has a built-in feature
macro security feature that runs a security check on legacy add-ins. The
message "Running virus scan..." is misleadingly displayed as well for
that check.
If you have any legacy add-in in that folder, move it out of the folder
and open Word again. If it opens fast now, you'll have to decide how
important the add-in is to you, as there is no way to switch off this
built-in macro security check.

Thanks for the help. I guess the unregistering helped, because both of my
problems have been solved. Thanks again Graham and Patrick.

Thank you SOOOO much. I've spent so long trying to get Word to open properly,
ran so many virus scans, and finally this is the solution!

Hi Patrick,

The solution has really worked!!!! I removed all the files with .wll
extension from the path you had mentioned and it really worked. Thanks a
lot...
