Why two of each?

Wes Stebbins

have a brand new IS7-V2 (Intel i848P-ICH5) 1.0 Abit motherboard., with
Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 08/17/2004 BIOS. It has a 2.9 Celeron
processor, a Western Digital WD400JB-00ETA0 40 GB hard drive, a generic IDE
DVD-ROM 16X drive and a TDK CDRW241040B CD R/W drive, and a 3.5" floppy
drive.

I have the TDK Burner and the DVD on IDE 2 on the motherboard, and only the
Hard Drive on IDE 1.

The problem is in hardware devices in control panel, I apparrently have two
each of the following:

Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers
Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers
Primary IDE Channel [Controller]
Primary IDE Channel [Controller]
Secondary IDE Channel [Controller]
Secondary IDE Channel [Controller]

Everytime I try to right-click on every one of the above (not just one
representative of each) and Uninstall, then after I'm done (with all 6) I
reboot, the duplicates still always show up. IT always reinstalls all 6
everytime when detecting new hardware after rebooting.

Any insight on this would be beneficial.

Fixing this may involve some manual registry edits, and searching
through your \inf folder to delete duplicate INF files. But in the
meantime, try booting into Safe Mode and remove all but the first
occurrance of each entry. Then reboot normally.

If you still get duplicates, post back.

Have you loaded the motherboard drivers? WinXP does not know about SATA
and will ID as IDE controller. If you are not usingSATA, disable it in BIOS.

You dupe might of came from the onboard raid controller that is on the
ICH5..
The issue then becomes Win XP SP2 doesn't know what that is.
And so when you installed Windows.. you might of just install the
generic drivers that is for the IDE Controller.

If your board doesn't have IDE and SATA, delete all the instances and
restart. Make sure you have instaled all motherboard drivers first.
