why the obsession with CPU temperature?

From time to time I read posts from people who are obsessed with
cooling their CPU. I'm interest to know if my CPU is operating within
the manufacturer's limits and my system is very stable, what do I gain
if I keep the temperature lower? I mean, would I pick up some speed if
the CPU runs cooler?

I have an AMD XP 2800+. The temperature is 49C idle and 58C at full
load. Are these normal? The HSF is the stock HSF from the retail box.

If you overclock the CPU to a higher speed, it'll run hotter. Keeping
it cool will result in stable operation at the higher speed.

What was that about obsession? Surely if you weren't obsessed you
wouldn't ask.

Longer CPU fan life, but only if the fan is run backwards from the
norm and sucks in hot air from the CPU.

The CPU speed is set by a quartz crystal whose frequency barely varies
with frequency (enough to make your time clock slightly inaccurate).

As another poster stated, overclocking is one reason for 'obsession' with
temps. My P4 2.4C runs at 35C idle and 51C full throttle. Looks like AMD's
are still running a bit warmer Then, again, I've got a server tower with
tons of fans. Using the retail HS/F that came with the processor.

If cooler the CPU will not run faster, but will last longer.

Temp senors are often inaccuate. Your fingers work better. If you KNOW you
have applied the HSF properly, just feel the side of the solid metal of the
HSF. Touch the case with the other hand to ground yourself first. It should
not feel hot, just slighty warm.
