Why does it take XP so long to apply a new color to the desktop
background? There is a very distinct pause when I change this:

Display Properties > Desktop > Color.

Why does the pause happen?
What is XP trying to do that is so slow?

By contrast, I can change the XP background for a pre-made wallpaper
and that change takes next to no time to happen.

Takes about 5 seconds on my nearly one and a half year old computer,
that had about 13 open windows and apps running.

I wouldn't consider that a long time.

It takes about twice as long on my PC. I would say that's a
staggeringly long time! :-)

Iconid (a free utility from http://www.sillysot.com/) changes
background color in a fraction of a second.

Then use it. But how often are you changing the color, that 10 seconds
is such a big deal? Daily? More than one a day?

I hadn't changed the color of my background from first install until
today, and I only did that to see how long it takes.
