Why so much data left in this temp area?

In C:\documents and settings\Beeemer\local settings\temp I have
dozens of folders and hundreds of files totalling 149MB.

Many of these files are dll and exe and although I know that .tmp
files can be deleted I am reluctant to delete everything in this temp
folder.

Why are files like dll and exe files left there?

Is your start up also slow?

Just curious.

In most cases you can delete stuff in a tmp folder.
If you are really paranoid, burn it to a cd and then delete it.

Better to be cautious than sorry.

Lots of installs will put their files in there during the installation.
Once they are done, many never do any cleanup afterward. Some installs
require a reboot so they use the file(s) there to continue the install after
the reboot. If you kill an application or it crashes, it obviously cannot
close and delete any temp files that it had open, so you'll have to do the
cleanup. If you have no more pending installs (that require a reboot but
not all actually inform you that a reboot is mandatory), you can delete
those files. Some may be inuse by an application. You'll get a prompt
telling you cannot delete that file, so delete the rest.
