Temp file deletion question

Tom H.

Hello,
I have a temp folder with 978 MB of data in it -- 285 folders and 5170
files. The path is C:\Documents and settings\user name\local settings\temp

I don't really want to keep almost a GB of temporary files that my not be
needed any more.

Is it safe to delete files in this folder? How about files and folders with
old "date modified" dates?

Thanks for any help you can give.

yes, anything in the
temp folder is expendable.

as a suggestion, after you
clean it out, i recommend
to modify the current environment
variables/settings for the temp
and the tmp to c:\temp.

you can also relocate
the internet temp folder
to c:\temp as well.

the above makes it easier
to locate and manage the
trash.

Any file in that folder tree is fair game for deletion. XP will not delete
a file which is in use; therefore, there is little danger in just deleting
away.

Thanks for the help guys. It looks unanimous and it is what I was hoping to
hear. Now I can free up a lot of disk space.

Just a reminder before deleting all temp files.
If you installed any new programs that require a reboot to finish, don't
delete temp files until you reboot as they may be needed to complete the
installation.
That is why it is usually recommended to delete temp files (also Recycled
Bin) right after a successful boot-up.
