They could be files from programs that you have downloaded or installed,
especially if they are located in temp directories. Perhaps some of the
programs running on your computer use them or were installed from them.

I have a number of zip files in various directories throughout my computer.
Most are leftover from installations and are in temp directories. Some are
used again if you choose a Repair option on a particular program. If they
are in a temp directory, you could probably delete them safely. If they are
in a program folder with a bunch of other files for a particular program, I
would probably leave them alone unless you know for sure they are not
needed.

I thought that if they use them, they would have been uncompressed. So
compressed files are used on an ongoing basis? Do they uncompress them to
use them each time they are needed?

That makes sense. I'm probably not noticing the parent directories of these
files. I'll check it out. Thanks.
