Why Shutdown Ever?

I have an easy one for you all... I have a few users that
would prefer not to shutdown Windows ever, so I was
looking to see if there is anything documented by
Microsoft that I could show them stating that it is best
to shutdown or at least reboot your OS from time to time.
We are currently using Windows 2K Pro and XP Pro. I was
unable to find anything documented in the knowledge base,
but believe that may be because of the general
understanding by all that machines need to be turned off
or at least rebooted from time to time. Any one know of
any articles concerning this?

The newer nt versions of windows, including xp, don't really need to be
rebooted or turned off like previous versions of windows, as long as they
are properly cooled. I have a win2k server here that has been up for 90+
days and it only went down cause the power went out and the ups battery shut
it down. My work and home xp pro machines stay on 24/7. Sure sometimes it
freaks out and you have to reboot, but I never shut them off. As long as
they stay cool, with power supply fan, processor fan and heat sink, 2 case
fans preferred, and any other fans you can hook up, its fine to run them
24/7. Reboot if needed.

In theory they are right - it should never be necessary to reboot - however
many operating systems and applications have memory leaks and other bugs
that can be avoided by rebooting regularly.

What is a memory leak?.....

The only thing, I know of, in favor of shutting down is; if the PC is in a
hostile environment, i.e., industrial,etc., the shut-down time is that much
less time to pull smoke, oil, dust, etc. through the computer.
