I cleaned a win Xp pro of spyware [new.net] and other junk thru add
remove applet and thru AdAware SE personal.
When I shutdown computer using "start/turn off computer" at shutdown
window, windows stated it was "updating do not turn off computer". Then
after about 3-5 minutes it shutdown.
I didn't have time to reboot as it was friday. I never saw this when
shutting down any Win XP computer.

If updates have been downloaded and not installed manually by the user then,
yes, Windows will start to install the updates when you shut down and, yes,
it will display a message to the effect that updating is in progress and not
to turn the pc off.

In addition to John Barnett's reply, "updating" also refers
to updating the Windows Registry for the computer settings
at the time when shutting down was initiated. It could take
a significant length of time if changes had been made that
would require substantial editing of the Registry, as might
happen when adware, malware and spyware that are linked to
application and system files are removed.
