I want to know why I should choose Microsoft's FrontPage over Macromedia's
Dreamweaver MX 2004.

Great answer.

Both are solid programs and have their own strengths.

Since you know your skill level and the features that most interest you,
why
not download the evaluation copies of both and compare them.

You can run the FP demo or order a 30 day evealutaion kit from here:
http://www.runaware.com/microsoft/frontpage2003/

You can order a 30 day evaluation of Dreamweaver here:
http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/evaluation/

Somebody forgot to mention cost...

Assuming that 2 applications are more or less equal in quality, I would go
for the less-costly of the 2. That would be FrontPage.

Anyone want to rate the 'learning curve' of the two?

By a long shot.

It's the first issue that is the tricky one, and can really only be decided
by the OP. My personal opinion is that Dreamweaver delivers on the cost,
but that's me. It's nice that you have a trial option for both to enable
you to make this choice.

Be aware that the DW UI and basic approach is VERY different from the FP UI,
at first blush.

I agree wholeheartedly with (of course you, Murray, and) the post by JDR,
btw. As both apps have trial versions, it certainly doesn't hurt to try them
both out. While it may be argued that they are more or less equal in
quality, each has features that the other does not, and one may be
friendlier to an individual over the other. I was simply mentioning cost as
a legitimate factor in deciding, which had been overlooked.

I agree with you. to me, the DW feels "Mac-ey", kind of like how PhotoShop
feels that way.

I just think that FrontPage is an easier to use and more efficient UI. I
also think with FrontPage 2003, a user isn't loosing anything (anything
much) by going with fp over dw. </IMHO>

I agree with you 100 % Kevin, the cost is a major consideration, especially
for people who are new to web development. It is not just the cost between
FP and DW, it is also the cost if you purchase both.

I have seen several cases where new to intermediate users purchased
Dreamweaver based on their "ego" rather than their skill level.
Unfortunately for them after a month or so of trying to figure it out, buying
books and in one case taking courses, they all ended up purchasing FP.

They now have invested over $600.00 in software, not to mention their time,
books and classes. This all could have been avoided by evaluating the
versions, which is what I always recommend to people, as I gave up on the FP,
DW debate long ago.

As for my personal view, I have been using FP since they purchased it from
Vermeer (FP 97), and would rather spend my extra time and money on
development apps such as Visual Basics.net, Flash, etc..

I don't have a FrontPage cheerleading uniform :-)), but I firmly believe it
offers the most bang for the buck.

I just found my copy of 1.1, the rebate coupon says it expired 12/31/96 (I guess I never got my 40 bucks back :-()

I can't remember what it was called before that, but I do know I had the orig. Vermeer FP too (probably still have it in my Software Museum).

| Actually, the first MS version was 1.0 (or 1.1...it's been a long time).
