Why screen turns grey in winxp when shutting down?

Please can someone explain why when you click start and shutdown and you get
the options for stand by, restart and shutdown, the screen turns grey?
I know this is not a problem and this should happen and seems to be part of
the windows design, but i would like to know the reasons why this happens!

Because that's the way Microsoft designed it. They must have thought it
would look good.

Thanks for the answer. However, my manager is looking for a more
comprehensive explanation as to WWHHHYYY?

Anymore ideas???

There aren't any other answers. It was a cosmetic decision. If your manager
really is spending his/her time worrying about stuff like this, have
him/her call MS tech support and pay for it if s/he doesn't believe us.

Explain to him why the sky is blue, then he'll understand.

We can only guess at Microsoft's reasoning. I would venture to say it is a
visual aid that simply reinforces where the user's choices are heading -
end of user session, restart, shutdown or one of the other choices
available from these screens.

If his boss is so anal I very much doubt that he will understand, this is one
for Dilbert I think.

Do you want to know the mechanics behind "how" the change takes place rather
than "why" it takes place?

To indicate that the remainder of the operating system is unavailable
until you respond to the "Standby/Restart/Shutdown" dialog. It's similar
to the way unavailable commands are grayed out in a menu.

First, go to www.dilbert.com and follow the link at the bottom to email
Scott Adams and tell him about your manager's obsession with the way XP
changes colors when it shuts down. I suspect this will end up in Dilbert.
Second, tell him there is a shortage of color in the world and that Windows
is simply returning unused color to the world.
