why oh why did I upgrade from 98?

all was calm in netville (small wired home network) all using win98SE, a
cable modem and router when it became advisable to upgrade to win2Kpro for
VPN for my work, nearly instant connection among all machines.

Now:

1)no real connection to work (win2000 server) I connect right away but it
is slow as molasses in winter to drill down to the place I need to go (then
I get a broken pipe message), so no work has gotten done.

2)connection to other machines at home slow slow slow if at all, usually
only after a "find computer" command

3)sharing laser printer on now win2Kpro machine works on two of three win98
machines... I do not have win2000 server CD, I have the driver for the
printer, the balky machine says it has it, and that the printer is
unavailable or offline (it's not).

All win98 macines can connect and browse win2k

life was so much simpler

any help or advice?
