Why not have "make it fit" on format instead of changing font's

After having Used Word Perfect for years. Why can't Office Word 3 have
"make it fit" or other words meaning that on the format instead of changing
font's?

Word has had this since at least 1997, and it's easy to find in Help if
you search for "shrink to fit", "fit to page" - or even (I just tried it
in Word 2003) - "make it fit".
