Why my word documents get changed after being e-mailed in Outlook?

When I send word documents in e-mail attachment using Outlook - the document
file gets changed. Its size also changes, although when I open it in MS Word
its content looks the same. If I send the documents in e-mail attchaments
using Bat! - then no document change occur.

Can somebody tell me what's happening?

Best regards,
Vladimir

What size are you looking at? File size in Explorer or the file size
indication of Outlook?

I am looking at the size shown by Windows Explorer. Document that was 10,752
bytes became 18,432. Document that was 1,837,056 bytes became 1,838,592.

I have also done binary comparison. The files are actually different and
that is not encoding problem. There are bytes or byte arrays changed or added
here and there, while most of the document remains the same.

The document however remains valid and is opened correctly by MS Word after
being received on the other side. Its content seems to be the same.

If I change the '.doc' extension of the document files to '.do_' for example
the change does not occur.

I can provide the document files before and after being send/received by
Outlook if necessary.

Do you use a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook? See if disabling
this integration solves your issue.

I am using a very lightweight antivirus scanner AVAST. Stopping it does not
change anything. My friend in Australia does not use this scanner but has
exactly the same problem. BTW I am using MS Outlook 2003 SP2. It has a
default config, I have not changed anything, just configured the basic e-mail
account settings.

Try to check for youself, you will probably experince the same misterious
change in e-mail document attachment.

The documents are changed when Outlooks sends them and moves them to 'Sent
items' box. So, while they are in the 'Outbox' they have one size. When they
get to 'Sent items' they are already changed and have a different size.

Vladimir
