Why letters in a Word doc get changed, such as an "e" to a "%"

Very annoying. I think is is associated with the saving of a Word doc but
probably is a Windows problem. This never happened before but has been a
common problem now for months.
Fpr example, everything will be fine with a doc but after a change is made
and the doucment saved, I learn later that elsewhere in the document, a
letter in a word has become a different character--e.g., the word "the"
becomes "th%"--and the error is not easily noticed it will not be flagged
with a red underline.
