It was Microsoft's idea of better. It's *pretty*. They wanted
something to sparkle and be eye candy.
Users can't see the behind the scenes updates, so the screen had to be
'better', if that's what they call it.

Its kinda like XP when it came out over win98. That menu thing was
new and a lot of people complained/commented or reverted to classic.
I just got a new computer w/Vista as the OS. Why does it look so different
from Windows XP?
The Apple desktop looks nothing like Vista other than it displays on similar screen technology.
The Mac OS x task bar has been mimicked by 'RocketDock' which is NOT an MS product.
Subsequent windows are bound to look the same regardless, and always have. Apple and Microsoft have been copying each others ideas since the very beginning..
