Why is the "NEW/BLANK" Document come up as an existing document

When I first start up Word usually a blank document opens and is named
Document1.doc. Now when I do this a document that was previoulsy created and
saved appears. If I should click on "Open a New Document" it too appears with
the same text but is now named Document2.doc.

I have removed and reloaded MS Office and this changed nothing. Ihave even
deleted the document that is appearing as a new document, but this changed
nothing.

How do I solve of this problem?
