Why is the long description of a control ({FORMCHECK}) displayed?

I'm having recent difficulties with my Word documents. When I paste anything
from VISIO or PowerPoint, it appears on the Word documents as a hyperlink.
Also, when pasting a URL, it also appears as, {HYPERLINK.......}

Another thing: On a word template, anytime there is a checkbox control, it
appears as {FORMCHECKBOX] rather than the actual square.

I can't find anything in the Customize section of the Tools menu.

Please help.
