Why is the autonumber function starting over?

I have been working on a new database for some time. After taking a break for
two days, I resumed entering data in my inventory index.

For some reason, the autonumber function has restarted at 29...after I have
already entered 107 items. Every time I enter a new item, the generated ID
number (the primary key in my inventory) triggers a "duplicate value"
message. How did this happen? How do I fix the problem?

Hi Stasha,

You don't say which version of Access you are using, but this is a known
bug with A2K (and also with A2K2 and A2K3 if you've run a Compact &
Repair). To fix it, you have to download the most recent service pack of
the Jet database engine. Read about it at

Thanks LeAnne,

I have A2K3 (file version 4.0.8618.0), and I recently downloaded the newest
service pack. I ran a compact and repair _after_ the bug showed up. I checked
out the link you posted, and it looks like I only need the security
bulletin(?)

This is my first attempt at setting up a database since the 97 version...I
wish I remembered more. The tutorials didn't help much, here.
