Why is my email message size doubled

Emails usually have a 5MB attachment and are short and simple, but the "size"
column shows as 12MB ( I do have them forwarded from Gmail to my outlook via
POP.) If I rebove the 5MB attachment, the email still shows as 6 o7 MB even
after I compact ????????????

Mail cannot send binary information. In order to send an attachment, which is
often binary and not human-readable, a mail client must encode the attachment
in a human-readable character set in order to send it. This encoding process
can greatly enlarge the size of the message. Since we don't know what process
you used to remove the attachment, it's nearly impossible to account for the
remaining size of the message.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the info... I did use outlooks "remove" command to remove the
attachments. Is there anyway to reduce the size of the emails.. a simple 10
word email with what appears to be NO special enhancements etc. can be 3MB

I just sent myself a message with 11MB of attachments (as reported by Windows
Explorer). Outlook shows it to me as containing 11MB in Sent Items. and then
again as 11MB when I receive it again.

I don't see any "Remove" command, but I do see a "Remove" item in the context
menu when I right-click one of the attachments. When I remove an attachment
and save the message, the size drops to an amount that's the size of the
removed attachment smaller. In other words, I can't duplicate what you see.

Thanks anyway for trying.. I guess your "computer" is not broken... mine
appears to be.

Perhaps if you were to clarify some of the discrepancies in your description
(like what "remove command" you're talking about and where you found it), we
can figure out something.
