Why is Disk Defrag running soooo slow?

It is possible that the drive is failing, EVEREST from
www.lavalys.com will scan the SMART hard drive monitor and
give you a report. There might be a hardware problem with a
cable or connector, the firmware might need an update, but
it is also possible that the drive is over-heating. If
there is a layer of dirt, a bearing going bad or some other
problem, that would effect the drive. Even a general heat
problem would effect the defrag because CPU use is high
during the procedure. Check all your fans and vents. If
there is a fan in the HD cage, perhaps it has failed. If
not, maybe you can add a fan, some cases provide for this.
There are thermal probes that can be attached to the drive
to check the temperature. There are also fans with remote
temp sensors.

Have you run chkdsk, if there are directory/file problems it
could slow defrag.

Good luck. BTW, you will probably get a ton of spam if the
GMail address is valid. You should munge the address so a
bot can't harvest it. The spam may also have viruses.

| The defragging is being run from safe mode. I also
regularly use
| AdAware, Scanspyware, and Microsoft Antispyware. Also
have Norton AV.
| There actually were no programs installed or updated
during the week
| between the 30 minute defrag and the onset of the slow
defrag. In my
| previous post, by no real changes I meant I created a few
new Word
| documents, received some email, and did the usual amount
of web site
| visits.
|
| I do appreciate all the advice. I'm just not having any
luck appling
| any of it to figure out what happened.
