Why is autocomplete date in Word wrong?

My Word's auto complete date is often off by a day either way. The computer
clock itself is correct. What's up? It catches me off-guard. I have Word
2000 (9.0.2720) and Windows 98 SE (4.10.2222A).
 
It seems that Word captures the system date when you start it. If that date
changes while you have Word open, it doesn't update (for AutoComplete
purposes only; date fields are correct).
