Why in the hell did they change the power supply of a SATA?

I was very lucky that I have an adapter that will work. They both
have 4 wires and both have Yellow, Black and Red, Black.

The only reason I can think of is to frustrate the end user.

I do understand that the interface cable is slimmer and will allow
better air flow, but I see no good reason to change the power supply.

You, apparently, cannot count.

The SATA power connector adds a 3.3V power supply which was not
available on the older connector.

For more details on the functionality of the connectors, read

Well that, and to facilitate lower power drives and hotswapping.

Thanks for the info.

I don't have a power supply that has the SATA so I couldn't count the
wires. The adapter has 4 wires in and out.

The drive I just bought is an OEM so there are no instructions.
From the link and info you posted, I can be sure that the new drive
will work with the old type power supply? Right?

I will just not be able to hot swap it. Right?

I guess I should have worded the title a little better. I have had it
up to here with DYI computers. I never seem to get the right stuff.
I have a pretty good chance of hooking everything up when I get the
right parts, but it seems like they change something each time I
upgrade and I need an adapter to make it work.

Thanks for you time.

Come here and ask before you order the parts.

Good luck.

You know what I hate? 400 kinds of screws! Every time I upgrade, none
of my old screws fit!

We need ~one screw that fits them all, and in the darkness binds them~

yes and can it be a BA spec screw, perhaps 4BA.

Small but strong, you can lift a London Bus (DD) on a single 4BA screw.
