why icons appears very slowly

When I power onmy pc, the desktop wall paper (bliss) will appear pretty fast
but the desktop icons will take ages to appear.Any reason why is that so?
Scanned the system with AVG8.0, Ad-aware2008 and Spybot 1.6 detected only
ookies.Housecall does not detect any trojan etc except cookies. So have
cleared the temp folder, prefetch folder and history. Also run and cleared
the unwanted desktop icons. Defrag the disk does not seems to help either.
Any idea how I can get it back to normal? Thanks

What model machine? (Dell, HP, etc.), XP fully patched to SP3? What RAM do
you have?

Noticed that there are 2 AVG icxons on system tray and one of them says
scanning. So uncheck everything in msconfig and its now back to normal. Many
thanks for all the ideas
