Win XP Pro Sp1 suddenly very slow displaying desktop icons after bootup

This just started about a week ago...
It takes a good minute for the icons to display *after* the system boots up.
What I get is a blank desktop with the lower taskbar displayed...but no
icons on the desktop. Then, after a minute or so, my WinXP intro theme plays
and about 25 seconds after that the icons appear.
This behaviour also occurs when trying to right click on My Computer -
Properties. I get an hourglass which sits there for about 30 seconds and
then returns to the pointer. I right click again and this time the
properties dialogue pops up. But this waiting is driving me crazy.
System has been checked for viruses, spyware, and defragmented. I've also
cleared my History folder as I know that has been known to cause problems.
The system runs great otherwise. Last week I was experimenting with display
settings - going from 1024x768 to 1280x960. I also made the fonts 125%
larger ... and when it rebooted it started doing this. So, I reset
everything back to the original settings, but unfortunately, the bootup
times have not changed. I need some advice pleeze!

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by NORTON anti-virus system (http://www.symantec.com).
Version: 9.05.15 / Norton Anti-virus 2003 Pro Edition - Release Date: ALWAYS
UPDATED :)

.
I would go back to 1284x768 configuration, not all
applications can run with you new (1280x960) video setup
IMHO.

Did you recently install Norton Anti-virus. If so, check out the Symantec web site. There is a known problem that sounds a lot like what you just described.
