Why have you removed the world map feature from excel?

In excel 97, there existed a feature to create labelled world maps from
simple data.

This was brilliant for kids - being able to label and learn countries,
towns, continents.

Apparently it is gone from excel 2003 - how many schools will have been hit
by this - how many will be forced to buy new software - possibly NOT
microsoft software? Does the company not realise the educational impact of
this - will anyone in the company even read this, and bother to get back to
me?

Very unfortunate that MS decided to do away with this feature.

An alternative is to buy MapPoint, which interfaces with Excel 2002 and 2003.

Search for it on the 'net. About $250.00 US

Schools themselves, in addition to teachers and students, get substantial
discounts on MS software. Doesn't your school know about this?

As for someone from MS reading your post, the ng questions are answered by
other users like you, not by MS employees.

I remember reading somewhere that it's possible to get the old mapping
feature from Excel working with the new versions.. you have to have to
old version handy and then move some files to the new version
installation? I haven't done this myself, but I would explore the
possibility some more..

I am running Excel 97 on a Win 98SE C: partition on HDD.

Excel 2002 and 2003 Insert>Object give me the option "Microsoft Map", which is
the old version of MSMAP.

Found in C:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\datamap

Don't ask me how this is possible.

2002 and 2003 are on Win XP E: partition which can see the other partition. I
did not have to point them to MSMAP. They found it by themselves.

Point is.........MSMAP can be used in 2002 and 2003 if proper files are
present. Probably be forced to register some *.DDL's if files were copied
from 97 CD

Another option is "Microsoft MapPoint North American Map" because I have
MapPoint 2004 installed.
