Why have so many unused files fragmented all at once

Hello

I defragment about once a week with Norton Ghost so I know which files tend
to defragment and roughly the percentage of defragmentation (around 3 to 7%
depending on use)

But this week, I had a big surprise.

Four or five programs which I haven't used (including one where you insert a
CD) have defragmented into thousands of fragments and I have a 57%
defragmented rate.

I'd like to know what might have caused this?

I did install Windows Live Messenger and wonder if it installed itself in
the free spaces on the HD but it doesn't appear to be defragmented itself
so....????

Thanks

Norton Ghost is NOT a defragmenting program. What program are you using that
shows you the level of fragmentation? It's not Ghost.

Windows Live Messenger has a new MSN Journal in support of Sharing Folders.

Sorry of the two split replies. My fingers are too fast with CTRL key.

Windows Live Messenger has a Sharing Folder Journal:

Messenger Sharing USN Journal Reader service

I've noticed that it has done some defragging on it's own ... still trying
to track it down.

You can solve this by copying folders out, removing the source folder and
copying the folder back. This will compress and add data back contiguously.
