Why don't all the folders show up in front page?

In the folders view in Frontpage 2003, all of the folders do not show up. I
have selected the option to view hidden files, but the folders that do not
show up aren't hidden anyway. It seems to be compltely random which ones do
or don't show up. Each page I make should have a folder to accompany it, but
only about 2/3 of the folders show up in Frontpage. The folders are there, I
can see them if I open up the web page through windows, and if I publish the
entire site, it will update the information in the folders, but if I just
want to update a few new pages, or changes to pages, if the page is one of
the random pages whose folder doesn't show up, I cannot update it without
publishing the entire site. I would like to know how to see all the files and
folders in my web site folder using Frontpage.

If you are talking about the _vti folder, these are never viewable in FP, as they should never be
modified by users.

The _vti folders are never publish between locations/servers. The FP extensions on the remote server
will create and manage the _vti folders as needed when you do a Complete or Change Pages Only
publish. Change Pages Only is the only method that will delete content on the remote server that has
been deleted in your local copy. The _vti folder are not used on servers that do not have the FP
extensions.

If you use Selected Publish to publish individual pages/files, then you are basically copying the
selected files to the remote server, any images or other external content associated with the
pages/files will NOT be copied along with the pages/files.

Bottom-line, you need to use the File Menu | Publish Web / Site with Change Pages Only selected.

not, they are not _folders. I created a page, Mypage. This page is a .asp
page, like all the others on my site. It is the exact same layout and format
of the other pages, but with different content, and graphs. When I update
this page, the text is updated, but any graphs, or other visual media, that
would be automatically saved to the folder, Mypage_files does not update,
because I would have to select that folder to publish as well. Most of the
other pages, i.e. Mypage2, Mypage3, have folders that show up, Mypage2_files
and Mypage3_files, respectively. I can publish these folders easily. The
Mypage folder is not hidden, and I have recalculated hyperlinks. I would note
that I did not create this folder, or any of the respective folders for my
pages. They were created automatically when I saved the page. When browsing
through my folders in MyWebsites where the site is located in windows, all of
these folders show up, and have the same properties.

You should not have pages associated with individual folders of the same name, if you have first
opened a web, and then creating your pages and import the any images into this current open web.

Sound like you are creating a web for each page.

well the folders are automatically created when a make a new page on my site.
they are contained within my website, so they are not new web folders being
created. (If I were to save a page from the internet (file:save as) anywhere
onto my computer, it would create this folder for the page automatically,
where ever I saved the page. And this folder would contain all the files used
on the single page I saved. I have just saved the page for discussion groups
home.htm, and the folder Discussion Groups Home_files was automatically
created and saved in my documents, where I saved the page. the folder
contains 23 files which are used somewhere on this discussion group page.)
Each folder created in frontpage has a filelist.xml file in it, and a
ws_ftp.log file in it. as well as different .gif files or thumbs.db or
image.wmz, whatever files are required for the page to be displayed
correctly. it is basically a folder holing all the different components for
each page. each folder also contains a hidden _vti_cnf folder as well.

FP doesn't create folders for each individual file in the web, so how are you creating new pages?

IE will create a folder for each page that you save from a web site, other Office apps will create
individual folders when you choose to save a page for the web or as HTML, these folders are call
thickets and are hidden from view within FP, but no version of FP does this.

Those are thicket folders (the folder associated w/a file when you save it from the browser) managed and hidden by FP
Never save pages to your FP web from outside of the FP web
- always File Import or drag/drop into your FP when while opened in FP
Even then, FP will hide & manage the thicket folder

I've never used another program to create web pages. I've always used FP, and
every single web page i've ever created has a folder for it. I didn't make
the folders, when I saved the page in FP, the folder automatically appeared.
Most of those folders are viewable in FP as well. They do show up, at least 9
of the 13 created do. FP makes these folders, and it requires them to be
published in order for the page to show up correctly. I am using Frontpage
2003, as I have been since I first created my site. I don't know how else to
create a page, other than clicking new page, and then saving it when I'm
done. I have pictures and graphs on each page, that are imported from
Microsoft Word, or Internet Explorer in the case of .jpg's, but for the
..jpg's it gives me an option of where to save them, and I save them in the
images folder, that was automatically created by frontpage as well. But for
graphs imported from word or excel, it does not give me an option of where to
save them, and they are automatically saved to the folder that Frontpage
created. This wouldn't be a problem, except now one of the folders that
doesn't show up, I need to update. I got around this problem simply by
publishing the whole site, which updated the folders, because they are there,
you just can't see them. I was just wanting to know how to update without
having to publish, because that would save me some time.

The pagename_files folder is a thicket folder, and will always be
hidden in FrontPage unless the thicket connection with the page is
broken.
The only way to publish one of these folders is to publish the web.
Thickets are formed when using any of the drawing objects in the
Drawing toolbar, or using any objects associated with or produced by
other office programs, such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint.

Thank you, that was very helpful, and definitely explains what has happened
in my site. Just one last question then, how do you break a thicket
connection? It seems that must have been what happened for these folders to
show up in my front page, as there are more showing than hidden. And is it
bad to break the connection?

I usually export the page and file to the desktop, then delete from
the web.
In Windows explorer, Use Tools->Folder Options - View tab and set
"Managing pairs of Web pages and folders" to "Show both parts and
manage them individually"
Then rename the folder on the desktop.
Finally, in FrontPage, File->Import the page and folder back into the
web, and correct any broken links/components that may result from the
import/export. Using Windows Explorer on the web itself does not
normally succeed in breaking the page-folder connection within FP.
I see no harm with breaking that connection.
