Hi

for some reason I thought this problem was fixed in the latest SP, but
obviously NOT ..

when I try to delete files that have been recently used by an application,
somehow XP locks them and does not allow deletion or moving the files.
folders also.

this is particularly annoying, because it usually means a re-boot is
necessary.

why - on an operating system supposedly so bloated with 'superb' features,
is this simple file managment feature so lame?

is there any kind of reg hack that will fix this?

thanks

Unfortunately there isn't enough information here to offer much assistance.

More details as to what the files and applications are would be helpful, but
it's possible that the application hasn't actually released them, or
terminated incorrectly.

Is this any file, any application, one or two applications specifically,
etc.?

the files were Quicktime .mov (movie) files, and their associated JPG icon
images, and the folder containing them. They were being moved from a
camera chip (extenal 'drive' showingi up thru USB card reader) to a folder
on the computer HD. Files that I had viewed briefly in Quicktime were not
able to be "cut" from the flash-card, nor even deleted when the flash-card
was removed and re-inserted.

in task mgr, there were no instances of QT visible, either in the
applications or processes window.

(ps - thanks for the link dfrog, but I don't want to install another TSR to
eat up ram etc; XP is an OS that should be fully capable of unlocking the
handles on files after their associated app quits...)

Its not neccessarily a Win problem, but that of the third party software and
its interaction with Win

BTW, dfrog, I see "softwarepatch.com" contains a lot of updates for software
apps and even windows. Is this site to be trusted? There's little on it on
google, one spyware warning. Is their stuff legit?

Do you want spyware on your computer?

As far as I am concerned the only legit place to get updates for Windows
is from Microsoft. The only legit place to get updates for your
software is from the software maker's site. The only legit place to get
driver or firmware updates for your hardware is from the hardware
manufacturer's site.

softwarepatch.com is a great site. Every update that I've ever gotten from there
was just a link to an original site, like a Microsoft patch link is a direct download
link to microsoft.com.

H T, - the bit that I had hoped may help was the stages 1 thro to 7, not
necessarily the TSR bit.

I respect John John's views and also concur with ju.c's views. At the end of
the day we all have to make our own mind up about which course of action to
take.

Good luck in getting your problem sorted.
