Why does W2K not ask for name/pass when access XP-pro

Does anyone know why W2K does no ask for name/password when access (file sharing) a XP pro system where my name (user) does not exist. Instead I get an error that requested logon type is not granted. If I access a W2K in same way it works fine.

You are sure that there is no account on the XP Pro target
system by the same name as the account in use on the accessing
remote system ??
Are any groups and/or accounts listed in the User Right to
log on over the network of the XP Pro machine ?

Thx Roger

There is NO account with same name on the target XP pro system (I want to user to specify a valid USER/PASS)
If there were (and this account had the right to access the share), I would have been allowed access
Reminds me ... it could well be that because there is NO account, XP pro will try as GUEST who has no access. Maybe turning of that feature would help. Need to check if that is possible

I have given only users that belong to a particular GROUP the right to access the XP pro system over the network (Use the same setup on W2K). That same GROUP is also used on the share security settings

As said, the fact that XP pro tries to logon as GUEST if the account does not exist may have something to do with this problem. I believe that is a new feature, not available by default on W2K

No. Both versions would try Guest.
You should be getting a prompt, even if an account of the
same name exists but it has a different password or it has
no access to the resource.
You may be onto something though with your Guest mention,
as with no shared username string, if Guest were enabled on
the target system but it did not have network logon rights, then
I could see how you would get the behavior you report.

Indeed that idea pointed in the right direction. GUEST account was enabled for login, but had no network login rights. Windows gives up with error, without option to specify USER/PASS. I disabled the GUEST account and voila it gives the so desired USER/PASS prompt
Thx for your input Roger.

No problem, glad you are fixed up. Rather a stranger one, that.
