Why does the footnote info appear on the page after the reference.

I am working on a long document in Word 2000, and have a big problem with the
footnotes. The footnote information is appearing on the page after the
footnote reference mark - even when the footnote reference mark is not close
to the bottom of the page. I've read that this sometimes occurs when the
paragraph follows on to the next page, but it has someitmes occurred in
instances when the paragpraph in which the reference mark occurs is fully
contianed on the one page.

Any advice, or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated! This is my PhD
thesis I'm working on, and it due in a couple of weeks!
