why does space bar suddenly now delete?

If I highlight and retype in the middle of some text, and type a space it now
deletes the text coming after it. How do I stop it doing that? It's even
doing it in this box! This is Office 2003.

Press the Insert key once, to turn off Overtype mode. Note that,
in Word, Overtype is indicated by OVR displaying in black on the
status bar.

It's too bad the INS key can't be made to bleep when it's toggled the way
CapsLock and other toggle keys can...

Well, in Word, you can check the "Use INS key for paste" in Tools |
Options, Edit tab.

Though we did have one user here recently who was baffled by Word's odd
behavior, which turned out to be caused by that very setting.

I guess inserting clipboard contents by mistake is equally annoying as
turning on Overtype mode by mistake...

I had an interesting experience last night. In one of my templates, I have a
macro (provided by Bill Coan) that allows me to use Alt+Enter to override
the following style and keep the same style. On the off-chance that it was
stored in Normal.dot, I tried this in a document based on a different
template. What happened was the same as if I'd pressed F4 (I guess):
everything I'd just typed was duplicated. Sure enough, if I check the
Customize Keyboard dialog, I find that Alt+Return is one of three shortcuts
for EditRedoOrRepeat. Who knew?

Well, I knew there are three shortcuts for EditRedoOrRepeat, but I
only knew F4 and Ctrl+Y by heart.

It is a mystery why (by default) three shortcuts are assigned to
EditRedoOrRepeat, when there is none for, say, the Paragraph dialog
box.
