Why does my profile go haywire sometimes? XP Pro

I have two user accounts on my XP Pro system. After my wife has used her
account and logged out, I attempt to log in to my account. I get the
following four error messages, which I'm pulling out of Event Viewer with
event numbers shown:

First 1508:
Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by
insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.
DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
another process. for C:\Documents and Settings\MyName\ntuser.dat

Second 1502:
Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this
error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If
this problem persists, contact your network administrator.
DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
another process.

Third 1515:
Windows has backed up this user's profile. Windows will automatically try to
use the backed up profile the next time this user logs on.

Fourth 1511:
Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary
profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

Then it proceeds to load me into a temporary profile - which is useless.
If I just restart my machine, I can then login fine to the profile and
everything looks and seems okay.

This problem doesn't happen everytime I login and it doesn't happen
everytime I login after my wife has been on the machine. But it happens
quite often, enough to be very annoying. What is causing the ntuser.dat to
be locked? Why does it say corrupt? Why will it only load me into a
temporary profile until I reboot and then it loads my normal profile just
fine?
I've done Chkdsk and a 3rd party hard drive scanner and the drive checks out
fine. I have all of the XP SP1 and critical updates. I also have a router,
a software firewall (ZA), anti-virus software, and pop-up blocker. I update
and run AdAware religiously. I am confident my machine is clean of such
outside interferences.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much for your help
