Why does my paragraph count say 17 when there are only 5 paragrap

Why does my paragraph count say 17 when there are only five paragraphs in my
document?
 
Toggle the display (CTRL+*) and see how many empty paragraphs there are.

Every time you press Enter you're ending a paragraph & starting a new one...
Just because you don't type anything else into it before pressing Enter
again doesn't make it any less of a paragraph.
