Why does my outlook send/receive button disappear?

Email accouts are set up properly.
When I open up outlook, the send/receive button is there for 5 seconds, then
disappears.
Help!
 
Are you in a mail enabled folder, not contacts or calendar? What version of
Outlook is this happening with?

unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

After furious head scratching, RAF asked:
