why does my new document look like graph paper?

When I open Word 2003 the page used to be blank but it has suddenly become
covered with squares like graph paper. The same is true of my notepaper
templates. The sqares don't print or show in print preview but they are very
distracting while working on the document.

Display the Drawing toolbar, click the Draw button at the left end,
select Grid from the popup menu, and uncheck the box for "Display
gridlines on screen".

I have no idea how that box gets checked if you've never visited the
dialog.

I have no idea, either, but it clearly does, judging by the number of
similar questions we've seen. Possibly the action of an add-in?

I also suspect it could be a template from the Template Gallery. There
are others that modify the Table/Gridlines and other settings so it's
a possibility.

Many thanks to all of you. Yes, your solution worked. I don't know why it
happened but I now suspect that setting the grid in a new programme,3D
Landscape 2, was probably to blame. It may have set Word's grid also and set
it to display the grid.
Again thanks.

Ah! If the program uses Word for display then that would explain it.

Unfortunately some programmers have no regard for user's preferences
and simply modify them permanently. A good programmer will temporarily
modify your settings but then set them back to exactly how they were.

I'm glad to hear you have it sorted out though. :)

It's been happening to me alot lately too. So far it always happens
when somebody with Word 2003 emails me their Word doc and I open it in
Word 2002. Doesn't seem to matter whether I open the attachment
directly from the email message or after saving it to the hard drive.
Neither the senders nor I have gridlines turned on, but the gridlines
are turned on in the document when I open it.

On the Drawing toolbar, select Grid from the Draw menu. Clear the check box
for "Show gridlines on screen."
