Why does my mouse change to a "pointer" and a cd image?

My mouse keeps blinking from a regular pointer to a pointer with a CD image
to the top right and then back to a regular pointer.

My guess it's telling me to insert a CD, but I have no idea why it would
want a CD inserted.

Anyone know how to turn it off????

Thanks in advance.

It's not that; it's trying to *read* a CD (or pseudo-CD device, a la
Virtual CD) for some reason.

Expect this to happen if you work directly off CD, or run programs
directly from there (as opposed to installing them from there and then
running them from the HD). In so doing, you'd spawn registry
references to the CD drive, and then when those refs are invoked, the
OS will nag at the CD drive. Can be MRUs, but also file associations.

What I'd do is search the registry for references to the CD's drive
letter, e.g. search for "D:\" if D: is the drive letter.

But while I'd do that, I wouldn't necessarily advise you to do the
same, unless you are as careful as I would be in terms of what you do
with what you find. If you do decde to delete or edit any registry
content, do it by hand and save the original state as a .REG (low down
near the "leaves" of the "branches", i.e. not an export of the whole
of HKLM) as your Undo path.

Safer, and may be enough to work, is to clear all MRUs via the usual
Taskbar rt-click, Properties, etc.
