Why does my machine take so long to save a file?

Excel workbook.

Pentium 4, Windows 2000.

Save it, it hangs there for several seconds then saves.

but also have a Pentium 3, Windows 2000. Save a file and it saves instantly.

Why is that?

This could be a disk problem. Perform the diagnosis of your disk through a
tool, which can be normally downloaded through manufacturer's site.

thanks. however, I have tried 3 different hard drives. A Seagate, Maxtor and
Western Digital.

they all produced the same result.

Hello

Could be possible that, IO Access is continous in that machine.
When you save the file, observer the CPU Activity inTask manager.
How does it behave. Download Filemon from Systinternals and observe if
there is any continous file access activity.

Activity before saving (doing nothing) is between 0 and 2%.

CTRL + S to save the spreadsheet, activity still at 0% until status bar in
Excel indicates it is saving.

Then the activity blips up to 11% for the second it takes to save.
