Why does my attachment open when I double click on it?

I have always been able to double click on an attachment in an email and it
promotes me to save or open the attachment but it opens it when I double
click on it. Can someone tell me how I can stop this from happening>

When I double-click on an attachment, it opens - it has been that way
since I have known Outlook.

If I want to save an attachment I click on Save Attachment (or Alt-F-N).

That's a Windows Folder Options settings. Click Start>Control Panel>
Appearance and Themes>Folder Options. Click the File Types tab and select
the file extension for the attachment in the Registered File Types pane.
Click the Advanced button and check the box labled "Confirm open after
download". That should do what you want.
