Why does it take so long to open a mail?

Each time I click on a mail, whether it has been opened before or not, it
takes between 9-11 seconds to open. I am using Panda Platinum antivirus suite
- when I disable all the functions it improves the opening speed by about 2-3
seconds but this still isn't quick enough for me. Any suggestions would be
gratefully received

How many more add-ins do you have installed that require loading?

Account type - POP/SMTP
Being a bit of an amateur don't know what you mean by 'add-ins that require
loading'
This problem started occurring about 6-7 weeks ago - before that I didn't
have the problem and I can't think of anything I've installed since then to
cause the problem.

Are you running Internet Explorer 7?
How many websites do you have configured in the Restricted Sites Zone?
Control Panel-> Internet Options-> tab Security-> select Restricted Sites->
