it takes a long time to send a message

Suddenly, it takes a long time to send a message from writing it to the
Outbox in MS Outlook 2003.

½ of the messages that I compose take the normal time, about ¼ second while
the other half take about 15 seconds to send.

I am writing about messages that do not have graphics and/or a lot of text.

Why do about half of my messages take so long to send and how can I fix
things so the messages are all sent in a timely manner?
