Why does it take so long for windows to start?

I have installed new software to my Sony Pentium IV Laptop, and apparently most of these software are running at start up, I take it that is why it takes so long for me to start using windows, How can I change this? Do I have to uninstall the software in order to get it off the taskbar? Can I just keep them from running at start up? , if yes how?

Can anyone recommend a magazine that helps to keep updated on Windows XP?

Goto Start => Run and type msconfig. This will open the
Sytem Configuration Utility. If you go to the Startup
tab... I don't need to explain more. Experiment and
restart. XP will ask you at next boot if it is working
fine.

Tip of the day for Win2000 users??? Copy msconfig.exe to
your PC from WinXP. Yep, it works.

There is a way to choose which programs load when windows
starts up.. Go into the registry, and go to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Run

It should list the programs that load when windows does,
so just delete the ones that you don't want to load

Msconfig does exactly this, but you don't need to delete
any entries or edit the registry. Msconfig only disables
the items, perfect for the amateur user, unless you know
what you do. Playing around in the registry is no joke.

Just follow the rule: "If it ain't broken, don't fix it"

Hi, you sure the msconfig.exe works in win2000? coz i tried to download the
msconfig.exe for win2000, then after I play around with that thing, and
restart my computer, then during startup it tooks agesssss and 100% cpu
times and I can't afford that, so I just reinstall the OS...

I just used the one coming straight from WinXP. I don't
trust these odd downloads, not even TweakUI. It used to
crash my Win98. Just take the file straight from a XP
install. 141Kb

NO, not a good idea to use MSCONFIG as the first step.

better to check the properties/options of each program to see if there is a way to stop it from auto loading at boot.

use the msconfig option when all else fails.
and be prepared for the system to complain because you did use it.

Hey, well I've gone in to misconfig ,but I really can't tell which should be the essential programs that should start, any hints?

I have disabled the programs that I installed recently, which I know will not create a problem, but there is a long long list.

Please help...

Yes, here is a hint.
On a clean install over two years ago there were no startup items in
msconfig, and at present there is only one, my antivirus program and it's
the only one that's ever been there.
