Why does it sometimes take so long until the Search Dialog appears???

Well the subject says it all:
on some folder it takes forever and a day (e.g. 30 seconds or more)
until the Search dialog finally shows up, while on others it opens
almost immediately.
This can be rather annoying, if one has to search for a couple of
different items.

Any idea, why? What is the system doing during that time? Can one
somehow speed things up?

sometimes the indexing service can result
in long delays.

go to services and cycle it to see if it
helps make a difference.

If not, then there may be other issues, like a heavy
fragmented hd or something....

Search is pretty flakey. Try Agent Ransack instead (free and fast).

Mine is off.

Doubt it - the disk was recently defragmented.

I would understand, if the mentioned problems would cause the search
itself to run slow, but why does it sometimes take so long until the
search dialog itself appears? One would assume, that up to that point
there is nothing to do or to search nor anything else required, yet. So,
what is this thing doing between starting the search "application" (or
whatever the search menu entry triggers) and the initial dialog
appearing into which the user has to enter *what* to search for???

ok,
then turn maybe turning it to automatic then
starting it wil help. Mine is on.

another test is to see is the
delay is also experienced in safe mode.

another option is to set the
pagefile/virtual memory to a
stabilize size, rather than it
being in automatic mode. If there
are limited resources for your cpu,
the automatic readjustment for the
page file will be hampered.
(I set mine to min of 2 and max of 1152.)

other issues may be a factor but
since the computer is not impaired
and there is only a short delay for the
search window to pop up, it would be
better to eliminate those things that slow
down a pc; including the antiviral setting
up for scanning what you will be searching.

Basing the problem that your cpu is being bogged down
by something, it could be one thing or
a combination of many. And there are too
many and i would instead like to offer some suggestions
rather than spending alot of time.

temporarily disable unwanted startups from msconfig.

run all the options a maintenance tool like systemmechanic

run a windows repair with your windows cd.
the repair will restore any system files that
were replaced with incompatiable files or drivers.

i think that somewhere above you will find a
cause....
