Why does incoming mail go to Outlook Express not Outlook?

I recently transferred to NTL cable and have been using Outlook Express for a
while without problems. I then recently obtained and installed Office XP Pro
2002. During installation, a prompt detected that Express was installed and I
was asked if I wished to upgrade to Outlook and transfer all data. I
accepted. Since then, my incoming mail still goes to Express only. My
internet settings confirm that Outlook is now the default. When Express is
opened, it states that Express is NOT the default. I ran "Test Settings"
which continually failed until I entered my NTL password. It then tested
okay. When I started the computer on the following day, I noted that incoming
mail was still going to Express. I ran "Test Settings" again and two errors,
instead of the original one, were reported. Again, I re-typed my NTL
password and re-tested. Again, it tested okay. However, despite these
"successful" tests, I still seem to have the same problem in that whilst I
can send in Outlook but not receive, I can still send and receive in Express.

I am virtually certain that I did not alter any settings but merely
responded to the prompts during installation. I am also unable to see any
problem with the settings.

In the software package, I received three discs. Two of the discs are gold
coloured labelled, respectively, "Microsoft Office XP Professional, Version
2002" and "Microsoft Office XP, Version 2002, Media Content." The meagre
instructions on the reverse of the case simply advises to "Insert the disc in
the CD-ROM drive" and "Follow instructions on your screen". The XP Pro disc
was loaded and I was not prompted to load any other discs. The third disc
supplied is silver and labelled "Microsoft Office XP Professional, Post SP3
Update" and is dated 2006.

I have no reason, at this point, to believe that the latter two discs also
need to be loaded as all programmes seemed to have installed successfully and
I have also received, and installed, a number of web updates since
installation.

I have Norton Internet Security 2007 installed and, again, have no reason to
believe that this is causing any problem. The operating system is XP Home
Edition.

Any help that you can offer would be gratefully received.

Please excuse my cautiousness but I have had a number of seperate problems
over the past two years (the sum total of my experience!), all of which were
proven to be due to software problems and all of which took some considerable
time to define and resolve and eventually required two Windows reinstalls and
the reloading of all software. Until now, all was well!

Firstly, don't open Outlook Express! Secondly, have you either set up your
email account in Outlook manually, or imported the Account settings from
outlook express?

Go to your account settings and check the leave a copy of the message on the
server.
tools
accounts
mail
properties
advanced
leave a copy of mail on server
delete when deleted from deleted.

Then you can download in Outlook and Outlook Express. and other computers.
i.e. laptop and desktop.
It serves as a good backup as well.

As stated, I merely followed the prompts which included a "do you wish to
import?" message. Nothing, as I recall, was manually configured or altered.

That said, after further assistance from a more experienced friend who has
exactly the same set-up, we compared settings, item by item, and found that a
tick box (Tools/Options/Mail Set Up/Send Receive) marked "Schedule an
automatic send/receive every.......minutes" was ticked on my friend's
computer and not on mine. This seems to have cured the problem.

It seems that I was naive enough to expect that, unless prompted otherwise,
the system would automatically set everything up. I now know different!

Problem is solved (please refer to my reply to Gordon).

I do not think that this was the cause of the problem because, following a
continual server log-in error, we were eventually able to get the mail in
Outlook when I deleted my password and simply re-entered it. The problem was
that it would not retain after Outlook was closed, requiring me to repeat the
same process each time. At this point, we decided to check all settings.

I do, however, appreciate the information as this would, I assume, provide
additional functionality. I will certainly try it.

By the way, I used to ride bikes but I now fly aeroplanes instead and can't
