Why does explorer.exe continually crash?

I'm running Win2k SP4. When I open explorer.exe, it immediately
crashes and generates this error message:

Program Error
explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You
will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

I have removed several Windows update Hotfixes. I have also removed
the only IE update. explorer.exe still crashes. I can't remove IE
(as suggested by one KB article - 319124) because it is not listed in
add/remove programs. No anti virus software is installed.

Any suggestions how I can fix this?

Your machine is probably infested with scumware. Download and use these 3
tools:
Ad Aware
Spybot Search and Destroy
BHOdemon

I found the problem. WS_FTP Pro 6 was causing it. I uninstalled that
program and everything is working fine. I imagine some of the
integration options I chose caused it. Will try again with a basic
install.
