Why does email stay in the Outbox, even though it has been sent?

Using Outlook 2002 when I send an email it often stays in the Outbox looking
like it has not been sent, sometimes it has been even though it never appears
in the Sent folder. I get replies from emails I thought were never sent. Has
only starting happening in the last few months. I use multiple email
accounts, with volumonus Archive mail.
