Why does a deleted message open up when in the deleted files box?

When a message is moved from the inbox to the deleted items box, and then I
click on the 'deleted items' box, why does it open up and show me the
contents of the first email listed? It is like a preview pane but it could
be harmful. I usually delete items for a reason, such as they are spam or
junk mail! I don't want to see the contents of email I deleted, only the
subject line so that I can delete them safely.

You have the Reading Pane configured to show. If you don't want to see it
in the Deleted Items folder, turn it off.
